David Scala is a second-generation Filipino-American writer/director who received his BFA from NYU Tisch Film School. He has written & directed five short films that have won top prizes and screened at over 200 film festivals nationally and abroad, including the Seattle International Film Festival, Palm Spring ShortFest, Frameline, Outfest, Los Angeles Asian Pacific FF, CAAMFest, and more. He was awarded Outstanding Emerging Talent as writer & director for his short film, Grotto (FilmOUT San Diego 2013).
As a screenwriter, he has been a finalist for the Sundance Sloan Screenwriting Lab (2016, 2018, 2019), Hamptons Film Festival Screenwriter’s Lab (2012), and the NYU/Sloan Feature Film Award (2010). He was also a finalist for the 2016 Jameson First Shot film competition, hosted by Maggie Gyllehnaal.
In 2017, Mr. Scala made his playwrighting and stage directing debut at the New York Theater Festival with his play AMONG THE FURIES, based off his own unproduced screenplay of the same name. Out of 86 shows in the festival, the show went on to win the top award for Best Play, as well as Best Actress and Best Set Design. He was also nominated for Best Director. Currently, Mr. Scala is based out of New York, and he is developing multiple film and theatre projects.
Wrote, directed, and produced 17-minute short film ENGAGED, starring Daniel K. Isaac (Showtime’s BILLIONS) and Ryan Jamaal Swain (FX’s POSE). The film has screened at over 65 film festivals, including the Seattle International Film Festival, Frameline, Outfest Fusion, and the Palm Springs International ShortFest. The film won Best Comedy Short at the New Hampshire Film Festival, Best Short Film at ReelQ Pittsburgh, in addition to multiple audience awards.
